WHY THE MARA
A Landscape That Refuses to Be Hurried
The Maasai Mara is known for its great herds, predator encounters and extraordinary concentration of wildlife. But its real luxury is space — the freedom to slow down and experience the wild without rushing from sighting to sighting.
Away from the busiest routes, private conservancies open up a quieter side of the Mara. Spend longer with a lion pride, follow wildlife at its natural pace, and let the landscape unfold around you. Here, the experience is not about ticking off sightings. It is about being present in one of Africa’s great wild ecosystems.
TIMING YOUR JOURNEY
The Maasai Mara Across the Seasons
There is no single “best” time to visit the Mara — only different versions of it. The right season depends on what you want to experience.
JANUARY — MARCH
Warm Days & Resident Wildlife
Excellent year-round wildlife, warmer days and generally drier conditions. A rewarding period for predators, photography and travellers who want to experience the Mara beyond migration season.
APRIL — MAY
The Green Season
Rains transform the plains into vivid green landscapes beneath dramatic skies. Visitor numbers are generally lower, creating a quieter and beautifully photographic side of the Mara.
JUNE — OCTOBER
Migration Season
The dry season coincides with the period when migrating herds are generally present in the greater Mara ecosystem. Wildlife activity can be extraordinary, but crossings are natural events and can never be scheduled or guaranteed.
NOVEMBER — DECEMBER
Short Rains & Fresh Landscapes
The short rains refresh the plains, bringing greener scenery, dramatic light and excellent resident wildlife — often with a calmer atmosphere than the busiest migration months.
THE PRIVATE DIFFERENCE
The Mara, On Your Terms
A private safari gives you something increasingly rare: time. Time to stay with a sighting, follow your curiosity, change direction and experience the Mara without being rushed by someone else’s schedule.
SPACE TO EXPLORE
From the reserve to carefully chosen conservancies, we plan each journey around the places and experiences that suit you — with room to slow down and let the landscape unfold.
YOUR OWN VEHICLE
A private safari vehicle means the day belongs to you. Stay longer at a sighting, move on when you choose and explore without sharing the experience with strangers.
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
Experienced local guides read the landscape differently — tracks, behaviour, weather and movement all help shape where the day takes you.
YOUR OWN PACE
Early starts, long sightings, a slower afternoon or a full day in the bush — your safari can flex around what matters to you.
THE ECOSYSTEM
More Than the Migration
The Mara is alive throughout the year. Big cats, elephants, giraffes, plains game and extraordinary birdlife move through a landscape of open grasslands, riverine forest and acacia-dotted plains. The migration may be its most famous chapter, but it is only one part of the story.

THE GREAT MIGRATION
When the Plains Begin to Move
Each year, vast herds move through the greater Mara–Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing. Their arrival in the Mara can bring extraordinary concentrations of wildlife and dramatic river crossings — but nature follows rainfall, not a calendar.

THE HERDS ARRIVE
As conditions draw the herds north, wildebeest and zebra begin moving into the greater Mara ecosystem, transforming the scale and energy of the plains.
RIVER CROSSINGS & OPEN PLAINS
At the height of the season, enormous herds may gather across the grasslands. Crossings of the Mara and Talek rivers can be dramatic, but their timing can never be scheduled or guaranteed.
THE JOURNEY CONTINUES
As rainfall and fresh grazing shift, the herds gradually move onward. The Mara remains alive with resident wildlife long after the great concentrations have moved elsewhere.

FROM FIRST LIGHT
Mornings Made for the Wild
Begin while the plains are still cool and quiet. Early hours bring beautiful light, active wildlife and the feeling of having the landscape almost to yourself.
BEYOND THE VEHICLE
Experience the Mara Differently
A safari can extend beyond game drives — from a balloon flight above the plains to time in camp, bush moments and experiences shaped around where you stay.
BEYOND THE WILDLIFE
The Mara Is More Than What You See
Some of the Mara’s most memorable moments happen between wildlife encounters — conversations, changing light, quiet time in camp and a deeper connection with the landscape and the people who call it home.
PEOPLE & PLACE
Maasai Culture & Community
Where appropriate, thoughtfully arranged community experiences can offer a deeper understanding of Maasai culture, traditions and the relationship between people and this landscape.
LIGHT & PHOTOGRAPHY
A Landscape Made for Photography
Golden mornings, dramatic skies and long stretches of open country create extraordinary photographic opportunities. With a private vehicle, there is more freedom to wait for the right moment.
TIME IN THE WILD
Moments Beyond the Game Drive
Depending on your camp and itinerary, your days may include special moments beyond the vehicle — from time outdoors to relaxed evenings and experiences arranged around your journey.
WHERE YOU’LL STAY
Stay Close to the Wild
Where you stay shapes how you experience the Mara. We choose camps and lodges for their setting, character and fit with your journey — from intimate tented camps to refined safari lodges.

IN THE RESERVE
Close to the heart of the Mara’s famous wildlife areas, with excellent access to classic game-viewing country.
PRIVATE CONSERVANCIES
A quieter, more exclusive setting where certain properties can offer experiences beyond traditional reserve game drives.
PLANNING YOUR MARA SAFARI
A Few Things Worth Knowing
The best Mara journey depends on more than the season. How long you stay, where you stay and how you travel all shape the experience
HOW LONG TO STAY
Give the Mara Time to Unfold
For most travellers, three to five nights creates a more relaxed Mara experience — enough time for different wildlife encounters, changing conditions and unhurried days in the bush
GETTING THERE
Into the Mara
Most guests reach the Mara by light aircraft from Nairobi, while travelling by road can form part of a wider Kenya journey. We plan the route around the safari rather than treating the transfer as an afterthought
WHAT TO PACK
Keep It Light
Comfortable layers, neutral colours, sun protection and a good pair of binoculars cover most days in the Mara. Before you travel, we’ll provide practical guidance tailored to your journey
YOUR PACE
There Is No Safari Clock
Some mornings begin before sunrise. Other days call for a slower start or more time with a remarkable sighting. A private journey gives us room to shape the rhythm around you
